The tracks included on True Blue were recorded in the summer of 2004 at Joe Pisapia's home studio in East Nashville.
Joe and Dan wanted to make an intimate, acoustic album recorded with an ensemble approach and very little overdubbing. Adele Tyler assisted in choosing the songs, which reflect Dan's commitment to traditional songwriting forms and themes.
Recorded over the course of one week, the band consisted of Joe Pisapia on all guitars, Marc Pisapia on drums and percussion, Tony Crow on keyboards and Brad Jones playing acoustic bass. Additional tracks were provided by Jim Hoke (saxophones) and Chris Carmichael (strings). Adele Tyler and Melissa Mathes sang background harmonies.
