In Honor of Joe South   -  Thursday, September 6, 2012

The great Joe South left the planet on September 5, 2012. Joe was a popular music genius of the first order: he wrote, produced and performed some of the finest recordings of the 60's and 70's. In doing so, he inspired me and millions of others. It was my great privilege and joy to record Joe, in the early 80's in Nashville, performing a song I wrote titled "Shining.". He even played his famous sitar/guitar on the track. He was an amazing person, on many levels.

We will miss you, Joe. Thanks for the soulful, tuneful, meaningful and powerful music you gave us.

Here's the song.

In Honor of Levi Sims   -  Monday, March 19, 2012

I lost a friend and the world lost a great talent on March 12, 2012 when Levi Sims passed away after a life-long struggle with cystic fibrosis. Levi was a musical prodigy and by the time he was ten years old, he was opening for Mel Tillis in Branson, playing up to 300 shows a year. As a teenager, Levi moved to Nashville to pursue his dream. Wilbur Rimes introduced me to Levi and thus began a fifteen year relationship. We shared a love for traditional country music and for great songs. I was fortunate that Levi recorded several of my songs, and though none were radio hits, I treasure each and every one. Levi was a great talent, but he was also a great person. Honest, loyal, hard working, humble and a person of faith. He knew he didn’t have long in this world and he did not waste his time on trivialities. Below is a link to one of my songs Levi recorded. I co-wrote "Please" with the late Carson Whitsett and the track was produced by Wilbur Rimes.

Music Is Magic   -  Wednesday, September 21, 2011

I have released via cdbaby my recording of a song I wrote titled Music Is Magic . At a time when it's becoming harder and harder for music creators to earn a living, I want to remind my listeners not to take music for granted. The high quality of popular music we have enjoyed for many decades is dependent on the ability of serious, committed artists to support themselves with their music. Please support the artists you enjoy by actually buying their music, in whatever form you prefer. This track was produced by Joe and Marc Pisapia. Tony Crow added piano.

"To Life" Sets Record for Eddy Arnold   -  Wednesday, May 28, 2008

The great Eddy Arnold recorded Dan's song "To Life" twice toward the end of his career. In 2000, he recorded the song for Curb Records. Then, 2005, he recorded "To Life" again for his last project, an RCA album titled "After All These Years" which was produced by Jack Clement and Jim Malloy, legends in their own right.

RCA had planned to release "To Life" on Eddy's 90th birthday which was May 15, 2008. Unfortunately, Mr. Arnold died a week before the release. RCA went ahead with the release and promoted it as a tribute to Arnold's remarkable career.

For the week of May 23rd, "To Life" entered the Billboard country single charts at #49, making Eddy Arnold the only country artist to have charted singles in seven decades.
